Greenlots, a global provider of open standards-based technology solutions for electric vehicle (EV) networks, announced that its SKY network management solution has been selected by Maui Electric Company to manage the first open access public charging station on Maui.

The DC Fast Charger, supplied by ABB, will be installed at the Maui Electric's Kahului offices at 210 West Kamehameha Avenue by the end of the year and will be operational and ready for public use by the first quarter of 2014.

Based on Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP), the open communications platform that has become an industry standard in Europe and is gaining significant traction in North America, SKY allows site hosts like Maui Electric the flexibility to mix and match hardware and software vendors to suit its specific needs, while providing full access to programs and the ability to monitor charging station activity.

DC chargers running on SKY allow drivers to charge their cars, free from subscription-based issues, and offer payment options for credit cards via mobile apps, RFID cards, pay-by-phone or card swipe.

"The DC Fast Charger at Maui Electric's Kahului office is part of a five-year pilot program to advance and encourage the adoption of more electric vehicles on the island," said Sharon Suzuki, President of Maui Electric. "Maui Electric partnered with Greenlots because the SKY Network provides an open standards platform that provides Maui's EV drivers with variable time-of-use pricing and popular smart phone payment options, including pay-by-phone services."

"Greenlots' SKY Network management solution provides comprehensive site host tools and superior driver payment applications without requiring a subscription," said Brett Hauser, President of Greenlots. "By leveraging OCPP, the SKY Network is able to monitor charge stations in real time regardless of the hardware provider and provide best-in-class customer support. We are excited to partner with Maui Electric and support their efforts to encourage EV adoption."
