Ford announced it’s adding a diesel engine choice to its new 2013-MY Transit cargo and passenger van models, in addition to the 3.5L EcoBoost V-6 engine mentioned previously. The automaker reiterated that the all-new Transit will get 25% better fuel economy compared with the company’s E-Series vans. Weight savings of 300 lbs., compared with the E-Series, are also contributing to better fuel economy.

“With fleet operators facing skyrocketing fuel prices and constant pressure to reduce costs, Ford continues to expand its range,” said Kevin Koswick, director, North American Fleet, Lease and Remarketing Operations for Ford. “By offering multiple options to help solve these challenges, Ford is giving fleet customers true power of choice in finding solutions that best meet their specific needs.”

Overall, Ford said it plans to provide customers with a range of fuel-efficient engines and alternative-fuel technologies, including EcoBoost, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, battery-electric, biodiesel and CNG/LPG.

Even with the introduction of the new Transit van to the U.S. market, Ford said it recognizes the value of its E-Seris of vans to its customers. The automaker said certain E-Series body styles will be available through most of the decade in North America.

The Transit was among several vehicles discussed at Ford’s latest fleet vehicle preview.
