Ford Transit celebrates a decade in-market and its 10th year of U.S. production and sales with enhancements to E-Transit range and new charging, software, and integrated solutions, helping to ease the transition to electric and maximize benefits for commercial customers.

Born out of a partnership between the UK and German branches of Ford, the Transit became the first Ford product to be developed for all of Europe. The van burst onto the market in Britain in 1965, quickly developing into a staple thanks to its versatility and ultimately reaching far beyond Europe in influence and use.

After just six months in production, Ford noted that the Transit became America’s bestselling commercial van in late 2014 and outsold every other van in America, including minivans, before the end of 2016. And Ford has continued to invest in new variants and innovations across the lineup, in 2020 adding optional all-wheel drive and unveiling the E-Transit electric van, and introducing Transit Trail, its van life derivative, to the lineup in 2022.

“We’ve assembled more than 1.2 million Transit vans in the last 10 years, and 99% of Transits are still on the road, working hard for customers today,” said Tim Baughman, Ford Pro general manager. “It’s America’s bestselling commercial van because it’s Built Ford Tough, and businesses on every streetcorner rely on Transit to keep the country moving—from plumbing to carpentry and yes, delivery, too.”

Since beginning U.S. production in April 2014, more than 1.2 million Transit vans have been assembled at the Kansas City Assembly Plant in Claycomo, Missouri. And 99% of all Transit vans sold in the past 10 years are still on the road.

And, in 2024, the van was recognized as Work Truck's Commercial Van of the Year!

New Tech for Ford Transit

New for the 2024 model year, Ford Pro enhances range capability on E-Transit, offering an overall estimated range of 159 miles on low-roof cargo van models with 89 kWh of usable energy, which supports work covering longer distances and provides more capability to unlock electric solutions for new use cases, like refrigerated delivery.

The additional range over the previous model is an increase of 26% on low-roof and a 32% increase on high-roof models.

Leveraging Ford Telematics data, Ford analyzed more than 2.5 million trips, totaling 30 million miles, to understand that the average daily range for commercial vans in the U.S. is 74 miles. And E-Transit with enhanced range maintains the same 266 hp and 317 lb.-ft. of torque as the prior model.

Registration data shows that customers agree E-Transit owns work, serving more industries and more vocations than any other electric van.

  • New dual onboard chargers enable the E-Transit battery to charge faster than ever. The 2024 E-Transit can charge at a peak power of 176 kilowatts (kW).12 Fifteen minutes on a DC fast charger (180-plus kW) is estimated to add 67 miles of range on a 2024 E-Transit cargo van low-roof configuration—a 49% increase over the prior battery. And the 2024 E-Transit will charge from zero to 100% in just six hours and 11 minutes when using the now-available Ford Pro Series 2 80A charging station12—22% faster than the prior battery—providing a full charge overnight.

  • Available across the E-Transit van lineup, Pro Power Onboard provides 2.4 kW of power and is operable while the vehicle is in motion and while charging, enabling users to plug in a laptop, tools or other power equipment on the go or the jobsite.

  • E-Transit is available in more configurations than any other all-electric commercial van from a full-line automaker, offering two lengths, three roof heights, three body styles and up to 487 cubic feet of cargo volume.

Order banks for the 2024 E-Transit with enhanced range will open this spring, with deliveries expected to start later this year. 2024 E-Transit with enhanced range MSRP begins at $51,095.14 E-Transit may also qualify for the Commercial Clean Vehicle Tax Credit of up to $7,500 per vehicle.

Are You Tracking Your Fleet's True Total Cost of Ownership?

Bobit Business Media surveyed 190 fleet professionals and found that while most fleets are tracking costs, fragmented systems and data gaps are keeping true TCO visibility out of reach. With rising pressure to control spend in an increasingly volatile environment, the gap between what fleets think they know and what the data actually shows is wider than you might expect. See how your peers are managing costs today and where the industry still has room to improve.
