Two Toyota Corollas — the 2022 sedan and hatchback — recently rolled away with Top Safety Pick+ awards from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Both small cars were put through the paces, undergoing six rigorous crashworthiness evaluations and capturing good scores across the board. These included the driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, original side, roof strength, and head restraint tests.

However, IIHS engineers apply exacting standards to front crash prevention systems as well. Both Corollas met the measure as each comes with a standard front crash prevention system that earns superior ratings in both the vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian tests.

Finally, to garner “plus” status, good or acceptable headlights must be standard across all trims. In the case of the Corollas, two LED projector-based headlight systems are available — one curve-adaptive and one not — that each earn an acceptable rating.

IIHS notes that the awards apply to 2022 Toyota Corolla sedans and hatchbacks built after November 2021, when Toyota made improvements to the non-curve-adaptive headlight system. Previously, that system earned a marginal rating.
