Con Edison recently released its 2012 sustainability report, which highlights the utility’s achievements in its efforts to green its overall operations.

In 2012, Con Edison’s direct greenhouse gas emissions decreased more than two percent from 2011, and 45 percent from baseline 2005 emissions. Con Edison of New York’s steam and cogeneration stations are the company’s largest sources of CO₂ emissions, which are heavily influenced by energy demand and weather.

Although the fleet makes up just 1 percent of Con Edison’s total CO2 emissions, the utility still places importance on making sure its vehicles and equipment are in line with its overall environmentally friendly operations. It continues to reduce emissions by using biodiesel fuel, as well as expanding the number of hybrid and alternative-fuel vehicles.

Currently, roughly half of Con Edison's vehicle fleet is running on some form of alternative fuel or high-efficiency engine. The utility said it plans to replace more of its older models with hybrid and CNG vehicles.

With a reported total of more than 4,500 vehicles, the Con Edison of New York division alone earned its ranking as No. 72 on Automotive Fleet’s 2013 Top Commercial Fleets.
