CICB Expands Training for Articulating Boom Crane Operators

Last year, the Articulating Crane Operator certification become the National Commission for the Certification for Crane Operators' second most popular certification.

The Crane Inspection & Certification Bureau (CICB) has expanded its offerings of NCCCO Articulating Crane Operator programs.

According to Joel Oliva, director of operations for the National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (NCCCO), the CCO Articulating Crane Operator certification became the second most popular CCO certification program (after mobile cranes) last year, reflecting the increased market acceptance of ‘knucklebooms’ and loaders in the U.S. market.

Articulating boom cranes, or knuckleboom cranes, are primarily known for material delivery but have been gradually adopted to perform tasks that were previously handled by telescopic boom cranes.

“The many tasks that articulating cranes are being used for has led to some confusion as to if the operators are required to be certified under OSHA 1926 Subpart CC” said Jerry Longtin, CICB general manager.
