ADESA: Wholesale Used Vehicle Prices Soften in June
Tom Kontos, ADESA’s chief economist, reports that wholesale used vehicle prices for June continue to soften while the used vehicle supply continues to recover.
Despite healthy retail demand and minimal new vehicle incentives, the used vehicle supply continues to recover and put downward pressure on wholesale used vehicle prices, according to the latest Kontos Kommentary from ADESA Chief Economist Tom Kontos.
According to ADESA Analytical Services’ monthly analysis of Wholesale Used Vehicle Prices by Vehicle Model Class, wholesale used vehicle prices in June averaged $9,516 — down 2.9% compared to May and 3.7% relative to June 2012. According to Kontos, June’s softening price environment affected nearly all car, truck and crossover sectors.
Prices for used vehicles — remarketed by manufacturers — decreased 0.9% year-over-year, while prices for fleet/lease consignors were up 1.8% annually, according to ADESA. For dealer consignors, there was a 5.2% downturn compared to June 2012.
Based on data from CNW Marketing/Research, June sales for retail used vehicles increased 3.4% year-over-year for franchised dealers and 3.8% for independent dealers. And based on figures from Autodata, sales of certified pre-owned (CPO) vehicles were up considerably at 14.4% year-over-year.
