Chevrolet has unveiled its 2020 Silverado HD pickups at its Flint, Mich., factory ahead of the Chicago Auto Show, where it will show its heavy-duty pickup lineup and provide a demonstration of the new towing technology added to the pickups.
The 2020 Silverado HD, including the Silverado 2500HD 3/4-ton and 3500HD 1-ton pickups, will offer two V-8 engine choices, including a new gasoline 6.6L that achieves 401 hp and 464 lb.-ft. of torque or the 6.6L diesel Duramax that's rated at 445 hp and 910 lb.-ft. Chevrolet will pair the gasoline V-8 with a 6-speed automatic transmission and the Duramax with an Allison 10-speed automatic.
The 2020 Chevrolet Silverado HD can tow up to 35,500 pounds when properly equipped. This maximum tow rating represents a 52% increase from the outgoing model, due to many other upgrades beyond the more powerful engines. These include more robust front and rear axles, a standard 11.5-inch ring gear on 2500HD models (12-inches on 3500HD models), 30% larger-diameter prop shafts and on diesel models, and a large 28-inch diameter fan.
For the first time, the trucks will offer an optional power take-off (PTO) for commercial users who need to power equipment with their trucks while parked at a job site. A user can enable the engine-driven PTO via a button inside the cab.
Chevrolet will offer the trucks in five trims, including Work Truck, Custom, LT, LTZ, and High Country. Three cabs include regular, double cab, and crew cab with standard length and long cargo boxes. Two chassis frame lengths offer additional ways to customize the trucks.
The 2020 Silverado HD trucks will also offer GM's Advanced Trailering System with 15 rear-facing camera views, including a "transparent trailer" that shows vehicles directly behind the trailer. The system will also be offered with the 2020 GMC Sierra HD pickups.
The trucks will go on sale this summer. Pricing will be announced closer to that time.
