David Hayward’s fleet journey turned a chance opportunity into a mission for safety, innovation, and data-driven fleet management.
The fleet management career of David Hayward, CAFM, began unexpectedly, but it quickly became a purpose-driven mission rooted in strategy, data, and safety. With a background in science and business, he recognized early on that fleet is more than just vehicles; it’s the backbone of business operations, especially in industries like pharmaceutical sales and technical service fleets. His analytical mindset and methodical approach gave him a competitive edge, allowing him to optimize operations and drive meaningful change.
Now an established fleet and business operations leader and director of fleet management at ABM Industries, Hayward is focused on harnessing the power of data, AI-driven insights, and evolving technologies to enhance safety and efficiency.
From tackling data overload to ensuring fleet safety remains non-negotiable, his fleet journey involves transformation, innovation, and forward-thinking leadership.
An Accidental Start, A Purpose-Driven Mission
Hayward’s story highlights the evolving role of fleet management, where data, technology, and leadership intersect to create smarter, safer operations. He is also a member of Work Truck's Editorial Advisory Board.
Q: What first sparked your interest in fleet management, and how did you start your career in this field?
Fleet management found me, not the other way around. I started at Wyeth purely by accident! They wanted a business-savvy European and were willing to teach fleet. The rest, as they say, is history.
Q: What was the turning point or defining moment in your fleet career?
There’s no sugarcoating this one: the tragic loss of a driver changed everything. A missing backup alarm on a vehicle highlighted the stark reality of fleet safety. That moment cemented my mission: safety is non-negotiable, and every vehicle, not just the big rigs, should be equipped accordingly.
Q: What do you enjoy most about working in fleet management? What keeps you motivated day-to-day?
Fleet management is never dull. It’s a whirlwind of problem-solving, shifting regulations, and technological advances. Just when you think you’ve solved a challenge, it comes back with a new twist. And that’s the beauty of it, adapting, improving, and keeping things moving forward.
Q: What’s the biggest challenge in fleet management today, and how are you addressing it?
The biggest hurdle? Data overload. Every organization struggles with making sense of the flood of fleet data, and telematics only adds to the mix. The real magic happens when fleets turn this data into actionable insights because numbers mean nothing if they don’t drive real-world results.
With AI-driven analytics and the right systems in place, the opportunity to enhance safety, efficiency, and cost savings is enormous. Fleet managers who master data management will lead the pack.
Q: How has the fleet industry evolved, and what trends do you see shaping its future?
Fleet management has been around the block, but the industry is evolving faster than ever. From data integrity issues to the rise of AI-powered decision-making, the game is changing. The key is staying ahead and understanding the trends and how to make them work for your fleet.
At the same time, driver expectations around technology are shifting rapidly. Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), real-time alerts, and automation are changing how drivers interact with their vehicles. The challenge lies in balancing technological advancements with ease of use and practicality. Drivers want technology that enhances safety and efficiency without being intrusive. Meeting these expectations while ensuring compliance and cost-effectiveness remains a key focus for fleet managers.
Q: What advice would you give to others in fleet management?
Network. Talk. Share. Collaborate. And most importantly, have fun! Fleet is a knowledge-driven field, yet so much expertise is lost as people retire or transition to other industries. Succession planning isn’t just a nice-to-have; it’s critical, especially for small and mid-sized companies. Fleet and the people who run it are indispensable to business success.
Q: What’s your vision for the future of fleet management?
AI is coming, and fleet managers need to be ready. The future belongs to those who can ask the right questions, the "Fleet Prompt Engineers" of tomorrow. The ability to harness AI-driven insights will separate the good from the great.
Q: Outside of fleet management, what’s an accomplishment you’re especially proud of?
Beyond fleet, life is all about good company, great music, and a bit of craic (as we say in Ireland). Music is my go-to escape, whether it's Beatles classics, Clapton’s blues, or even a little Miley Cyrus for variety. Entertainment keeps things interesting, from a well-crafted film to a lively pub conversation.
Q: If you could have lunch with any historical or modern figure, who would it be and why?
Gandhi or Brené Brown for their philosophies, but also polymaths like Ben Franklin, Teddy Roosevelt, and Marie Curie. They mastered not just their professions but the art of balance, blending ingenuity, wit, fun, family, and friendships. That’s the kind of life worth striving for every day.
