The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) tested 18 mid-size family cars in the organization's new "small overlap test," where a vehicle's front on the driver's side collides with an object. IIHS has regularly evaluated the damage to vehicles when they collide with a medium-size object on one side, but the new test is designed to test what happens when a vehicle's front end collides with a smaller object.
The video here shows the test, and IIHS' President Adrian Lund describes how select vehicles performed in the new test.
