UpfittingPhotos 6August 7, 2018

The development of the New Installation Vehicle Optimization (NIVO) upfit solution between thyssenkrupp and Adrian Steel was the result of a six-month effort that collected information from field employees about their job needs to ensure the upfit would be properly engineered to perform the intended operation.

Among the key accomplishments of the new upfit are in the areas of increased security, operational efficiencies, and vehicle standardization.

The NIVO upfit includes an aluminum bifold ramp for loading and off-loading material from the van. It is stored inside the van behind the wheel wells. When not in use, the ramp can rotate outside the vehicle to the side for unobstructed access into the van interior.

When the ramp is fully extended, a tech can easily load and off-road ladders and tools. An interior-mounted winch is used to load and off-load the gang box, which can weigh up to 500 pounds.

The thyssenkrupp NIVO has two interior ladder racks. On the interior side wall is a rack for a 6-foot step ladder. On the interior ceiling is a rack for a 21-foot extension ladder.

A locking mechanism secures the gang box and tool chest to prevent movement inside the van while the vehicle is in motion.  A steel diamond plate provides additional skid resistance.

Standing in front of the customized tool chest are (L-R) Dalton Cheaney, fleet account executive for Adrian Steel, and Tom Armstrong, director of fleet for thyssenkrupp Elevator, who show the ease of access to tools while a tech is at a job site.
