After Wal-Mart big-rig trucks were under violation in Massachusetts and Connecticut for idling illegally, the company has agreed to pay $50,000 in fines and equip its trucks with portable generators, the Boston Globe reported. The agreement says that Wal-Mart’s fleet of 6,500 semis have generators installed and signs will be posted at store locations advising drivers to shut off theirs engines. Six Wal-Mart locations in New England were found to be in violation after a 2004 EPA investigation found that the company was not incompliance with state and federal regulations, the report said. Wal-Mart officials, who say the price tag of the generator installation could run into the millions of dollars, are hoping that fuel conservation can make up for the cost.
