In a departure from its past, General Motors Corp. plans to delay the launch of key new vehicles if necessary -- including the 2003 Hummer H2 sport utility vehicle -- to ensure new models leave the factory in top-notch condition, according to the Detroit News. "Quality (on new GM vehicles) has got to be where the rest of GM is or better. If we can't get it, we just slow the production," said Bob Lutz, chairman of GM North America. "We're willing to sacrifice (production) volume for the sake of quality." J.D. Power and Associates surveys show GM topping rivals DaimlerChrysler AG and Ford Motor Co. initial vehicle quality for the second year in a row -- but still well behind leader Toyota Motor Corp., particularly in trucks. Customer complaints during the first 90 days of ownership dropped 11 percent on GM 2002 car and trucks, according to J.D. Power's latest study.
