NEWARK, N.J. -- New Jersey is considering revamping its automobile document system to allow drivers to renew their licenses, vehicle registrations and inspection stickers all at once, according to a report in the Star-Ledger on December 29. Currently, most drivers have three separate renewal dates for the necessary documents. A new digital system requires everyone to go to a motor vehicle office for a driver's license renewal instead of doing it through the mail. A consultant's report by Standard & Poor's claims the plan would reduce crowding at motor vehicle agencies by cutting down the number of trips motorists have to make to an office. State officials caution the plan can't happen immediately, because documents are valid for different lengths of time. The proposal would shift the expiration dates so that whenever more than one document is due for renewal in the same year they would be due at the same time. The Standard & Poor's report also would open satellite or mobile units for motor vehicle services in spots like shopping malls or train stations. Similar tests are already under way at senior citizen centers, according to the Star-Ledger report.
