Top GPS manufacturers plan to put out cheaper versions of the portable navigation system, as the holiday season approaches, in attempts to dominate the mass market, Reuters reports. As portable GPS systems are gaining popularity, market leaders Garmin and TomTom are lowering their prices in order to be the company to take the top spot. While GPS sales reached $11.79 billion this year alone, prices are set to decline as both Garmin and TomTom attempt to appeal to the average customer. According to a Canalys analyst, Garmin’s global average selling has fallen from $635.40 in 2005 to $443.90. Over the same time span, TomTom’s selling price has decreased to $374.60 from $627.10. According to Reuters, by 2010, researchers believe that in the U.S., GPS systems will have sold 20 million units, up from the 2.9 million in 2006.
