Mozambique's Vehicle Fleet Increases 832% Since 1990
Mozambique’s vehicle fleet grew by over 832 percent between 1990 and 2012, and there are now almost 487,000 registered vehicles, according to figures issued recently by the National Land Transport Institute (INTT).
Mozambique’s vehicle fleet grew by over 832 percent between 1990 and 2012, and there are now almost 487,000 registered vehicles, according to figures issued recently by the National Land Transport Institute (INTT).
The statistics published by the INTT on its website, and reported by Macauhub, showed that, in 1990, 4,039 new vehicles were registered in Mozambique, and at the time the fleet totalled 52,239 vehicles.
This compares to 2012 when 53,154 new vehicles were registered and there are now 486,920 registered vehicles.
By type of vehicle, the INTT statistics also show that there are 305,286 light vehicles, 103,564 heavy vehicles, 5,653 tractors, 13,552 trailers and 13,785 motorcycles.
In addition, there has been a marked increase in licensed drivers. Over the last year alone, there have been 32,574 driving licenses were issued for heavy vehicles, 8,134 for light vehicles, 6,850 for professional drivers, 1,869 motorcycle licenses and 1,466 public service driving licenses, to a total of 50,893 licenses. There are more than 600,000 registered drivers, an increase of 149 percent since 1998.
