Michelin Group will end tire production at its plant in Ardmore, Oklahoma, by the end of 2025.
The tiremaker has been producing passenger tires for the tiremaker since 1970.
In a brief statement, the company says the decision "is linked to the North American market's shifting needs and transformations, and the site not being equipped to deliver tires at competitive costs to meet those evolving market demands."
A History of Tire Production and Workforce Impact
The manufacturing facility boasts a daily production capacity of 37,500 passenger tires, along with an additional 3,400 light truck tires, according to MTD Facts Issue.
MTD's data reveals that this plant stands as Michelin's most extensive passenger tire production site in the United States, narrowly surpassing the original passenger plant located in Greenville, South Carolina, which generates 36,700 passenger tires daily.
Regrettably, the shutdown occurring in Ardmore has an impact on approximately 1,400 employees, as stated by Michelin.
Back in 2010, during the commemoration of the plant's 40th anniversary, it employed over 1,700 individuals, and its production area spanned 1.5 million square feet. Originally, this factory commenced operations as a Uniroyal Goodrich Tire Co. facility, and it became part of Michelin's portfolio following the French tire manufacturer's acquisition of Uniroyal Goodrich in 1990.
