As part of the recently passed state budget, new car buyers in New Jersey are required to pre-pay four years of motor vehicle registration up front, according to news sources. However, trucks, trailers and leased vehicles are exempt from the up-front fees. The Truck Rental And Leasing Association (TRALA) and the New Jersey Motor Truck Association lobbied successfully to block the proposal. Final legislation signed by Governor McGreevey limits the up-front registration fee requirement to passenger automobiles and motorcycles. Registrants of leased vehicles would have been required to pay up-front registration fees corresponding to the length of the lease. New car buyers who had previously paid $56 will be asked to cough up $224 - but won't have to return to the DMV until 2008.
