A New CARB-Compliant Engine for Heavy-Duty Trucks

Kenworth has unveiled a California Air Resources Board (CARB) compliant version of the PACCAR MX-13 engine for its heavy-duty truck models. This announcement highlights Kenworth’s commitment to environmental sustainability and regulatory compliance while maintaining top-notch performance and efficiency.

The new PACCAR MX-13 CARB-compliant engine, designed to meet 2024 requirements, is now available for order on select Class 8 models, including the T680, T880, and W990. Production is set to begin in the fourth quarter of 2024. This engine features new aftertreatment hardware that aligns with stringent California low nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions standards. The MX-13 CARB engine utilizes a twin-canister selective catalytic reduction (SCR) aftertreatment system and optimized emissions controls to achieve these standards without compromising reliability or performance.

“Our customers are looking for better options to successfully navigate the complexities of the evolving regulatory landscape,” said Kevin Haygood, Kenworth's assistant general manager for sales and marketing. “Kenworth models equipped with PACCAR’s MX-13 CARB-compliant engine achieve compliance with stringent emissions regulations while also delivering increased engine efficiency and enhanced fuel economy.”

The PACCAR MX-13 CARB-compliant engine has two power ratings: a 510-horsepower version with 1,850 lb.-ft of torque and a 455-horsepower version with 1,650 lb.-ft of torque. These options ensure superior performance and drivability without sacrificing fuel economy. This engine provides an industry-leading, efficient, and integrated low-NOx solution with PACCAR TX transmissions and PACCAR DX rear axles.

Kenworth has announced the availability of Bendix Fusion – Bendix’s most advanced collision mitigation system – for order on select Kenworth trucks.

This system, a key safety feature on Kenworth models since 2016 and standard on the T680 since 2018, incorporates new hardware and enhanced capabilities to improve road safety further.

Bendix Fusion combines input from radar, video, and brakes, creating a detailed assessment that delivers collision mitigation for both moving and stationary vehicles while minimizing driver distraction.

“We’ve been working with the Kenworth team for decades to provide North America’s fleets and drivers with safer trucks,” said Nicole Oreskovic, Bendix vice president of sales and marketing. “Kenworth has always been a fantastic and valuable partner on our journey toward safer roads for everyone.”

Nomination Deadline Nears for “Transition Trucking: Driving for Excellence” Award

Kenworth continues to support military veterans transitioning to the trucking industry through the “Transition Trucking: Driving for Excellence” award. With FASTPORT and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s Hiring our Heroes initiative, Kenworth seeks America’s top rookie military veteran driver. The grand prize for this year is a Kenworth T680 equipped with a 76-inch sleeper and the PACCAR Powertrain.

To qualify, candidates must be U.S. residents, military veterans, or current/former members of the National Guard or Reserves. They must also have graduated from a recognized driver training school and have been employed as CDL drivers since January 1, 2023. An expert panel of judges will select the top driver.

Kenworth’s SuperTruck 2, introduced at the ACT Expo in Las Vegas, marks a significant achievement in trucking innovation. This demonstrator vehicle, developed in collaboration with the Department of Energy’s SuperTruck program, surpasses its freight efficiency goal with an improvement of up to 136% over its 2009 model.

Featuring a PACCAR MX-11 engine, a mild hybrid system, and an aerodynamic design, the SuperTruck 2 sets a new standard for efficiency and driver comfort.

The SuperTruck 2 is designed with future zero and near-zero emission solutions in mind and includes advanced driver assistance systems and state-of-the-art electronics. This project underscores Kenworth’s dedication to pioneering advancements that align with the industry’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
