General Motors Corp. said on Feb. 22 that prices of its new Chevrolet Avalanche crossover truck, which goes on sale at the end of May, will start at $30,965. The Avalanche is one of the new "crossover trucks" with the ability to switch from a six-passenger sport utility vehicle to a full-size pickup truck by folding down the midgate behind the rear seat and removing the rear window. Folding down the midgate and the rear passenger seat converts the 5-foot 3-inch long bed to a full-size 8-feet 1-inch. Pricing for the two-wheel drive Avalanche ranges from $30,965 for the standard equipped vehicle to $35,409 fully equipped. For the four-wheel drive Avalanche, prices start at $33,965 with standard equipment and $38,409 fully equipped, according to GM. All prices include a standard $720 destination charge. The Avalanche will be available at the end of May, initially in California, Florida and Texas, before a national roll-out beginning in July. GM officials have said they expect to manufacture about 100,000 of the vehicles annually, but will be able to make more if the Avalanche is a hit. A luxury version of the Avalanche, the Cadillac Escalade EXT, will go on sale later this year.
