Ford’s New Midsize Electric Pickup Targets Value and Performance
Ford unveils plans fior midsize electric pickup on its new Universal EV Platform, aiming for affordability, performance, and fleet-ready efficiency by 2027.

Ford is introducing a midsize, four-door electric pickup built for both everyday drivers and commercial users. Production will begin at the Louisville Assembly Plant in 2027, with a targeted starting price of about $30,000. The truck will offer more passenger space than the latest Toyota RAV4, plus a lockable bed and frunk for added storage.
Performance goals, according to Ford, include a 0-60 time as fast as a Mustang EcoBoost, with a low center of gravity and added downforce for improved handling.
“We took a radical approach to a very hard challenge: Create affordable vehicles that delight customers in every way that matters – design, innovation, flexibility, space, driving pleasure, and cost of ownership – and do it with American workers,” said Ford President and CEO Jim Farley.
The new platform is designed to produce a family of affordable EVs at scale that are fun to drive and digitally advanced. By cutting assembly complexity — including 40% fewer workstations and a 15% faster build time — Ford aims to deliver vehicles with a lower cost of ownership than a three-year-old used Tesla Model Y.
“We took inspiration from the Model T – the universal car that changed the world,” said Doug Field, Ford chief EV, digital and design officer. “We assembled a really brilliant collection of minds across Ford and unleashed them to find new solutions to old problems. We applied first-principles engineering, pushing to the limits of physics to make it fun to drive and compete on affordability. Our new zonal electric architecture unlocks capabilities the industry has never seen. This isn’t a stripped-down, old-school vehicle.”
Why This Electric Midsize Truck Matters for Fleets
For fleet managers, Ford’s new pickup could be a cost-conscious entry point into electrification without sacrificing capability. The Ford Universal EV Platform’s simplified design reduces parts by 20% and fasteners by 25%, helping lower repair times and parts costs over the vehicle’s life. A wiring harness more than 4,000 feet shorter and 10 kilograms lighter than previous models means fewer failure points and reduced weight.
The cobalt-free, nickel-free lithium iron phosphate (LFP) prismatic batteries are designed for durability and lower costs, while doubling as the truck’s structural floor to free up cabin space. Over-the-air updates provide the flexibility to roll out performance improvements and new features without downtime.
For vocational and service fleets, the lockable storage options, instant torque, and competitive total cost of ownership could make this truck a practical addition to mixed or all-electric fleets.
Rethinking Vehicle Assembly
Ford’s Universal EV Production System replaces the traditional assembly line with an “assembly tree” method, where front, rear, and structural battery sections are built separately and then joined together. Large single-piece aluminum castings reduce parts counts, and pre-kitted parts arrive with all necessary tools and fasteners for each job. This process improves ergonomics for workers, boosts quality, and supports faster build times.
Ford’s plan includes nearly $2 billion to expand and upgrade the Louisville Assembly Plant, adding 2,200 hourly jobs and 52,000 square feet for more efficient material movement. Digital upgrades will give the facility the fastest network of any Ford plant worldwide.
The company is also investing $3 billion in BlueOval Battery Park, Michigan, to produce the prismatic LFP batteries for the truck beginning next year. Together, these investments are expected to create or secure nearly 4,000 U.S. jobs and strengthen the domestic EV supply chain.
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear called the project “one of the largest investments on record in our state,” underscoring the partnership’s more than 100-year history.
