Ford will supply Southern California Edison with rechargeable hybrid vehicles for real-world testing, the Associated Press reports. Southern California Edison will have one plug-in hybrid car by the end of the year and up to 20 by 2009. Ford and the utility company will gather information through testing to consider the plug-in hybrid for mass production. According to the AP report, the company will look at the cars’ “durability, range, and impact on the power grid.” A plug-in hybrid electric vehicle is a hybrid vehicle with batteries that can be recharged by connecting a plug to an electrical power source. In order to save energy, batteries may be recharged during times of low power demand, such as overnight.
