Upcoming reports will likely show that Ford Motor Co. is slowing down to do the job right, the automaker's executives told analysts May 15, according to a Detroit Free Press story by jamie Butters. Internal studies show that the automaker's quality is improving rapidly, which will become apparent late this month, when J.D. Power and Associates releases its annual Initial Quality Survey, which measures defects in the first year of vehicle ownership. But Ford will likely be surpassed by General Motors Corp. on the Harbour Report of manufacturing efficiency, which is set for release June 13. GM is also looking for continued improvement in the quality survey, according to the Free Press. In a separate media briefing, GM said quality scores industrywide have been improving by about 5 percent a year, but GM quality has been making double-digit gains in recent years. Last year Ford ranked last among seven major carmakers in the Power study.
