FCA US has produced its 1 millionth TorqueFlite 845RE 8-speed automatic transmission at their Kokomo Transmission Plant, the company announced.
FCA US has invested $860 million towards its launch and to expand production of the fuel-efficient transmission since 2010. The Indiana facility began production on the eight-speed transmission in September of 2012.
Depending on the application, the automatic transmission can account for fuel economy improvements of up to nine percent, compared to a more conventional automatic. The TorqueFlite family’s software adapts the transmission’s shift patterns to driver behavior and driving conditions such as longitudinal and lateral acceleration; grade steepness; temperature; and electronic stability control activation.
FCA uses the TorqueFlite transmission in the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger, Dodge Challenger, Dodge Durango, and Ram 1500. This transmission is projected to save vehicle owners more than 700 million gallons of fuel, and reduce combined carbon-dioxide emissions by more than 6 million metric tons, according to FCA.
The Indiana plant has been producing transmissions for nearly 60 years, including 4- and 6-speed transmissions.
