CDK Global has expanded its support of the ASE Education Foundation with a second donation of $20,000 to provide technician toolboxes to aspiring automotive students with a demonstrated need.

This donation is in addition to the CDK donation announced earlier this month that will support the foundation’s diversity, equity and inclusion program.

“One of the biggest challenges for entry-level automotive technicians is acquiring the basic tools needed to begin their careers,” said Mike Coley, ASE Education Foundation president. “Students are encouraged to work while still in school so they can increase their skills and productivity, but the cost of tools can be an especially difficult barrier for those from low-income households. With the help of CDK Global, we can make a difference for deserving students by providing them with essential hand tools they need to get started.”

Data shows that 94% of students who focus on a CTE (Career and Technical Education) course of study graduate from high school on time versus 86% for other high school students, a result that holds true in low-income areas as well. For those students to start their first job, they need the basic tools of the trade. Even with a student discount, sets of starter hand tools can cost $1,000 to $2,000, and this can discourage otherwise promising students from pursuing automotive service careers before they even get started.

“For many students interested in automotive technician careers, purchasing their own tools can be a weighted and unnecessary stress when entering the workforce,” said Amy Byrne, chief human resources and communications officer, CDK Global. “Through our partnership with the ASE Education Foundation, we are helping ensure students receive the valuable resources they need for their paths to success in the automotive industry.”

The ASE Education Foundation plans to expand their partnership in the toolbox program to auto dealers and other organizations to provide matching funds for additional students in local schools. The toolboxes are slated for distribution this spring before students graduate high school and enter the workforce.

“CDK Global’s additional commitment to our diversity, equity and inclusion efforts will aid the foundation in increasing the number of women and underrepresented groups who are entering the automotive workforce,” said Coley. “With their continued help, we are making great strides in that direction.”
