The rumble of Detroit engines and the crunch of gravel echoed through Daimler Truck North America’s proving grounds in Madras, Oregon. Six vocational operators and two participants from the gaming community from across the U.S. and Canada were there for the 2025 Western Star ‘Star Nation Experience.’
The one-of-a-kind annual event is equal parts competition, celebration, and community.

Competition at Its Core
Throughout the Get-Tough Challenge, operators tested their skills in the Western Star 47X and 49X models. From backing challenges on the steep climb of “Mount Madras” to precision gravel spreads in the rock quarry, every event required focus and finesse. They even swapped steering wheels for simulator screens in an American Truck Simulator challenge, proving that skill can translate from gaming to the open road.
For 2024 alum and returning team captain Casey LaDelle, it’s about more than just the scorecard:
“You realize the people behind the scenes ARE the Western Star brand, and the trucks are the product of the passion for what they do.”
From Competitors to Coaches
For 2023 champion Tatiana DeYoung, being invited back as a team captain was a chance to pass on what she learned:
“I like how I’m able to be a part of their experience and let them know what I know, and then they just take it and apply it however they would like. Because everyone’s different as a driver, and I can already tell my group is going to kill it,” DeYoung said.

A Brand That Celebrates Its Drivers
Brand Manager Alex Martin-Banzer said the heart of Star Nation is about more than trucks; it’s about honoring the people behind the wheel.
“We really look at all the winners that are here as the backbone of the vocational industry, and we want to celebrate them. We want to bring back that camaraderie and that pride in this business,” Martin said.
That mission was reflected not just on the track, but in behind-the-scenes factory tours, Detroit Assurance safety system demos, and off-the-truck adventures like fly fishing the Crooked River and four-wheeling in the Cascades.
In the end, one team claimed victory, but every participant left with new skills, connections, and memories. Watch today to find out which team took the crown in 2025.
