How Small Fleets Can Cut Costs Without Cutting Corners

Celebrating Small Business Week means celebrating the heart of America — and small business fleets are a huge part of what keeps that heart beating.

During small business week, it's important to remember if you operate even more than 25 vehicles for your business, you are a fleet!

From last-mile deliveries to critical service providers, small business fleets keep communities connected and the economy moving. According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, small businesses make up 99.9% of all U.S. businesses — and many of them depend on work trucks and vans to get the job done every day.

Running a small fleet is a constant juggling act. Owners and managers are wearing a lot of hats, sometimes all at once, and keeping vehicles on the road efficiently and affordably can feel like one more ball in the air. The good news is that help and solutions exist that don’t force you to sacrifice quality for cost savings.

We connected with Travis Hunt, General Manager of Ford Pro Parts and Service Transformation, to discuss some of the best ways small business fleets can cut costs without cutting corners.

Smarter Service Means Smoother Operations

One of the quickest ways small businesses can get back valuable time — and money — is through more efficient parts and service programs. Ford Pro, for example, is working to simplify fleet management by offering tools that boost productivity, reduce the total cost of ownership, and increase uptime.

“Our physical service network, including our new Elite Commercial Service Centers, is built with business owners in mind,” Hunt explained. “We have specialized technicians, state-of-the-art equipment, and extended hours.”

Ford Pro’s U.S. network of Commercial Vehicle Centers is also equipped with FORDLiive. This system connects vehicle data with roadside assistance, service centers, and support agents to help speed up repairs. Plus, fleets have access to genuine Ford parts and service plans designed to fit their needs and budget.

The fewer vehicle headaches a small business has to deal with, the more focus it can put into growing and supporting its customers.

Unlocking Savings with Preventive Maintenance

As operating costs continue to rise, stretching every dollar matters more than ever. And when cutting costs without cutting corners, Hunt points to one area many small fleets still overlook: preventive maintenance.

“Using data from customer vehicles, our technicians can identify potential problems before they turn into major repairs,” Hunt said.

Proactive maintenance isn’t just about avoiding short-term costs; it’s about getting the most out of every vehicle’s life cycle. Regular check-ins and minor repairs can prevent bigger, costlier issues down the road, keeping trucks running efficiently and extending their lifespan.

When unexpected repairs do happen, Ford Protect extended service plans are another layer of protection, helping small businesses manage the financial burden of downtime and surprise repair costs.

Mobile Service Keeps Fleets Moving

For small fleets, every vehicle counts. Even one truck sidelined for repairs can hit revenue hard. That’s where mobile service options are making a real difference.

“With Ford Mobile Service, certified technicians come right to the job site for routine maintenance and preventative care,” Hunt explained.

This keeps trucks on the road longer and eliminates the lost time and expense of taking vehicles to a shop. Mobile services can handle everything from oil changes to brake jobs on-site, all with no additional service fee. That means faster service, less downtime, and more time spent doing what small businesses do best: serving their customers.

Small Fleets, Big Impact

Small business fleets are essential to the fabric of the U.S. economy. They deliver packages, maintain infrastructure, transport essential goods, and provide vital daily services. During Small Business Week — and every week — it’s important to recognize that helping these fleets succeed isn’t just good business; it’s good for everyone.

Whether tapping into mobile service, prioritizing preventive maintenance, or taking advantage of smarter parts and service solutions, small fleets can keep moving forward without cutting corners.

Because when small businesses thrive, America thrives.
