That’s exactly what we did during the Fleet Legends webinar, an event I had the privilege of moderating, sponsored by Legend Fleet Solutions.

This wasn’t just a discussion—it was a masterclass in fleet management, delivered by some of the most respected names in our industry. Featuring Glenn Yamada, Bob Stanton, Pete Silva, and Matthew Betz, the conversation offered a unique blend of historical perspective, actionable strategies, and a glimpse into the future.

Our panelists didn’t hold back, sharing hard-earned lessons from decades in the field. From stories of trial and error to game-changing innovations, their insights are a must-hear for fleet professionals at any stage of their career.

Fleet Management: Then and Now

Fleet management today is almost unrecognizable compared to just a few decades ago. Stanton reflected on how the role of fleet manager has evolved: 

“When I began in this business, the fleet manager was often the top mechanic, promoted by default. Now, we’re seeing professional management skills at every level, which is something this industry has really needed,” he shared.

Silva highlighted another crucial shift: “This has always been a very white, male-dominated industry, but today, the level of diversity and inclusion has made the industry so much better. Women in fleet, in particular, are driving incredible change.”

Embracing Technology and Change

Betz, who recently celebrated an incredible 50 years in fleet, reflected on the fast pace of technology’s impact. 

“I can remember when email first came out—it was optional at the time, which created a lot of communication challenges. Today, technology comes at us so fast, you have to be adaptable to keep up and make the most of it,” he said.

Yamada shared the importance of ongoing learning: “With all the changes in legislation and vehicle technology, you have to keep studying to stay ahead. There’s always something new to understand to make sure no one pulls a fast one on you.”

Leadership Lessons for Long-Term Success

Building a strong team is no small feat, but it’s essential for long-term success. 

Silva shared his approach to building strong vendor relationships: “Your suppliers can be one of your greatest assets if you create a win-win relationship. If you treat them as adversaries, they won’t go the extra mile to help you succeed.”

Stanton emphasized the value of humility and collaboration: “The most important lesson I learned is not to take things personally. You’ve got subject matter experts around you every day—shame on you if you don’t take advantage of their knowledge and expertise.”

Preparing for Tomorrow’s Challenges

What challenges lie ahead for fleet managers? The panelists were unanimous in pointing to electrification, emissions regulations, and safety as critical areas to address. 

Stanton warned of the sweeping implications of upcoming regulations: “The 2027 federal emissions regulations for diesel trucks are going to have a massive effect on our business. Prices will rise, and technicians’ jobs will become even harder. Fleet managers need to prepare now.”

Betz highlighted the urgent need for improved driver safety: “It’s not enough to just have data and policies in place. We need to train supervisors to have meaningful conversations with drivers and stop risky behavior before it becomes a problem.”

Meanwhile, Yamada pointed to a growing concern: “Recruiting skilled mechanics is one of the biggest challenges I face. With the changes in technology and emissions regulations, it’s only getting harder to find people who can keep up.”
