As the number of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) technologies continues to grow, steering systems are becoming increasingly integrated.

The latest functions, such as lane keep assist, side wind compensation, active steering return, and road disturbance suppression, all rely on well-maintained and properly connected steering systems. Therefore, it is critical for fleet managers to stay up to date with the latest steering technologies and their troubleshooting procedures.

Latest Tech Tips from Bendix: Steering Assist Systems

This is where Bendix Tech Tips comes in. In their latest series, Bendix focuses on proper inspection and troubleshooting of steering systems in vehicles equipped with steering assist technologies.

Brendon Goede, Bendix product manager, emphasizes the importance of driver feedback in identifying potential steering issues. Drivers are usually the first to notice an issue with the steering system, and it is crucial to take these observations seriously.

  1. Pay attention to driver feedback in identifying potential steering issues.
  2. Follow the correct troubleshooting steps before replacing the steering gear.
  3. No commercial vehicle safety technology replaces a skilled driver who follows safe driving techniques and proactive, comprehensive driver training.
  4. If a problem arises with the electronic portion of the steering assist system, it will activate a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) displayed on a vehicle's smart dash and the diagnostic tool provided by the system manufacturer.
  5. Check the components and wiring systems that provide relevant input, including the forward-facing camera and the steering angle sensor.
  6. Ensure that the steering column is not binding by disconnecting it from the steering gear and hand-rotating the column at the disconnected coupling.
  7. Conduct hydraulic tests to ensure that the steering gears are receiving adequate hydraulic oil flow and pressure.

It is vital for fleet managers to stay informed about the latest steering assist technologies and their troubleshooting procedures. By following the above steps, fleet managers can ensure the proper functioning of their steering systems, which will ultimately lead to safer and more efficient driving conditions.
