Chrysler unveiled its 2015 Ram ProMaster City compact van at an event in Chelsea, Mich., in late June. The van, which will be available in early 2015, enters a competitive compact van market that also includes the Ford Transit Connect, Nissan NV200, and 2015 Chevrolet City Express. Horace and John Dodge reluctantly agreed to develop a commercial vehicle in 1917 after their sales associates lobbied for a work truck that could be sold to small businesses that made deliveries of fruit, beer, and other goods. The result was a vehicle based on the first Dodge passenger car. The vehicle eventually became the 1920 Screenside half-ton vehicle that is considered the predecessor of Dodge's light-duty pickup trucks. Photos by Paul Clinton.
Ed Bobit, founder and chairman of Bobit Business Media, publisher of Automotive Fleet,as well as many other media brands, passed away June 29 at the age of 86. Nissan introduced its NV200 compact cargo van for the 2010 model year to compete in the segement that at the time included only the Ford's Transit Connect.
Although the Ford Transit full-size van is brand new to North America, it has dominated the European market for nearly 50 years. More than seven million Transit commercial vans have been produced and sold around the world since the vehicle was introduced in 1965. Nissan entered the full-size van market with the NV cargo van for the 2012 model year, and has made incremental upgrades since that intial vehicle.
