Volvo Car Corp. unveiled its S80 luxury car at the Geneva Motor Show, which boasts elegant styling, two engine choices, breakthrough safety technologies and a premium driving experience. At 191 inches, the S80 is the same length as its predecessor, but is both slightly wider and taller. The interior space features intelligent design functions such as an ultra-slim center console, a top-of-the-line audio system and a strong Scandinavian design that pays meticulous attention to form and function. U.S. customers will have a choice of two engines, a transversely mounted 4.4-liter, 315hp V-8 designed by Volvo and Yamaha, and a new 3.2-liter inline six rated at 238hp. European customers get three additional engine choices including, two diesels and a five-cylinder gasoline engine. The drive experience is enhanced by the available Four C active suspension system and adjustable power steering, as well as a host of measures that help keep noise, vibration, harshness and road irregularities to a minimum. The S80 also comes with several active safety options including adaptive cruise control, a collision warning system with support from the brakes, and blind spot detection. Passive safety features include a new side airbag with dual chamber construction for enhanced hip and chest protection and a clever structural design that uses four different grades of steel for predictable crash energy absorption. Volvo has not set U.S. prices, but the company says they will be similar to the current S80, which starts at $37,585 including destination. The company anticipates sales of the S80 to reach about 50,000 new cars annually.
