Fleet managers might still have duty of care and reducing fleet costs as their top two priorities, but, according to a survey from U.K.'s Hitachi Capital, green issues have now made it into the top three.

The survey of customers and prospects revealed that overall expectations of their fleet provider have changed of late, prompted by fleet managers reassessing their own areas of major concern and starting to think seriously about green issues.

Reducing overall environmental impact was found to be a concern to 85 percent of organizations surveyed, yet 41 percent of respondents still do not include an environmental strategy in their fleet policy.

Guided by the survey responses, Hitachi Capital is able to offer fleet managers practical advice compiled from the top environmental measures that respondents felt should be considered:

1. Propose incentives for drivers who choose low emission vehicles.

2. Introduce disincentives for drivers who choose high emission vehicles.

3. Restrict car list to exclude cars with particularly high emissions.

4. Identify if alternative fuel vehicles could meet your specific requirements.

5. Restrict car list to consist of diesel-only vehicles.
