Inside Line, Edmunds' high-speed online car magazine, has chosen the Chevy Silverado 3500 as the winner of its 2006 Heavy-Duty Truck Comparison Test. The Edmunds editorial team compared three one-ton trucks, all of which were equipped with diesel engines, automatic transmissions and dual rear wheels. The trio of competitors included the Chevy Silverado 3500, Dodge Ram Mega Cab 3500 and Ford F-350 Super Duty. The tested Chevy Silverado 3500 has an MSRP of $48,885 and is equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission and a Duramax 6.6-liter, 360-horsepower diesel V8 engine. The Edmunds.com True Market Value(R) (TMV(R)) price of this Chevy Silverado 3500 model is currently $42,367. The tested Dodge Ram Mega Cab 3500 has a sticker price of $55,715 (TMV of $49,847), including a four-speed automatic transmission and a 5.9-liter, Cummins six-cylinder turbodiesel engine with 325 hp. The tested Ford F-350 Super Duty has an MSRP of $52,575 (TMV of $45,823) and is equipped with a five-speed automatic transmission and a 6.0-liter, 325-hp Powerstroke diesel V8 engine. "The Chevrolet Silverado has the segment's only six-speed automatic transmission and handled heavy loads better and more efficiently than the other trucks and was comfortable along the way," recalled Senior Road Test Editor Ed Hellwig. "Throw in the fact that it was the cheapest of the three, and our choice was an easy one." Hellwig also notes, "The F-350 is a good truck and with a little more power, a little less weight and an updated interior, it would be a front-runner."
