Reworked '14 Mini Cooper 27% More Fuel Efficient

The 2014 MINI Cooper will arrive on a longer, front-wheel-drive platform with a new generation of three- and four-cylinder engines, body styling updates, and an infotainment system, BMW announced Monday.
The vehicle, which was shown at the Los Angeles Auto Show, has been lengthened by 98 millimeters (3.86 inches) and widened by 44 millimeters (1.73 inches) on a slightly longer wheelbase (28 millimeters or 1.1 inches).
Mini will offer three engines. The Cooper S arrives with a four-cylinder gasoline engine; the Cooper arrives with a three-cylinder gasoline engine; and the Cooper D arrives with a three-cylinder diesel engine. A six-speed manual transmission is standard with a six-speed automatic an option.
Newly added "Minimalism" technology offers start-stop operation and an optional "green" driving mode. Average fuel consumption is 27 percent lower than the earlier generation. The 2014 Cooper also gets the new MINI Connected infotainment system that integrates smartphones and social-media apps.
In calendar-year 2012, fleets registered 1,292 MINI Coopers, which accounted for 3.9 percent of total sales.
