ALBANY--Some car owners in New York State can expect to pay more for vehicle inspections beginning this fall, the Associated Press reported this week. A stringent emission control test being set up by the state will be added to annual auto safety inspections starting in September for vehicles more than two years old. But officials at the state Department of Motor Vehicles said cars made before 1996 will be exempt because many of them lack the on-board diagnostic equipment that makes the computerized tests possible. Cars registered in New York City and the surrounding suburbs already undergo a more rigorous emission control test. The new testing system goes into effect in the metro region next April. So far, DMV has yet to announce what the tests will cost. Auto inspections currently cost $16.
