To date, the company says it has received 84 United States patents and several non-US patents that cover aspects of digital cartography and its applications from map data collection to delivery and use. Navigation Technologies' 30th patent in 2002 covers a server-based system that allows online navigation users to assign their own keywords to map-locations, in effect allowing users to create unique, personalized geographical 'bookmarks' that they can share with others. For example, an individual could register "Frank's surprise party" which would link to a specific restaurant location. Using the bookmarked phrase, guests would then route to their destination. Beyond personal applications, the patent covers businesses, real estate and delivery services, according to the company. Navigation Technologies' patent program was designed to capture and protect technological advancements in the digital mapping arena. Among the 30 awards received in 2002 are patents that delineate map data collection improvements, data compression methods and techniques for updating map databases incrementally.
