After Peter Gilbert, a Wisconsin resident and insurance salesman hit 1 million miles in his 1989 Edwardian Gray Saab 900 SPG, which still retained its original engine and turbo, Saab decided to turn the celebration of the vehicle's longevity into a marketing promotion. Saab executives are offering a free Saab to any U.S. customer who covers 1 million miles or more in a Saab unit that was originally purchased new. The new Saab will have a five-year/100,000-mile powertrain limited warranty and three-year/36,000-mile no-charge scheduled maintenance coverage. To kick off the promotion, Gilbert will receive a new 260 hp Saab 9-5 Aero, with an MSRP of $38,735, to replace his long-lived vehicle. Delivery of the new unit is scheduled for early 2007 at the Saab Aero Academy at Road Atlanta in Braselton, Ga. In order to gain the new vehicle, a customer must present verifiable proof to Saab USA that he is the original owner of the unit that covered 1 million road miles or more, according to executives. The customer must also show that the Saab is in running condition and that the odometer hasn't been tampered with. Moreover, the vehicle must also have been registered in the U.S. since it was new. If the customer is successful in meeting the requirements for a new Saab, he is responsible for all applicable taxes, title fees, registration and destination charges, Saab executives say. The offer is good through calendar-year 2007.
