Infiniti to Offer Hands-Free Phones
Nissan North America is expected to announce Oct. 15 that it has selected Colorado tech company Cellport Systems Inc. to provide an in-vehicle, hands-free cellular phone system for the Infiniti Q45 luxury sedan, according to the Detroit News. The Boulder-based tech company specializes in automotive wireless communication systems. The companies have not disclosed terms of the contract. Nissan will be the second carmaker to use Cellport's system. In July, the company landed a $48-million contract from Ford Motor Co. to provide its voice-activated, hands-free Cellport 3000 mobile phone system for some 2002 model year Ford and Lincoln vehicles as a dealer-installed option. The system has a docking station that can accommodate any make or model of mobile phone through specific adapters. It has also been integrated into a voice-activation cell phone system in the Q45 that was developed by Visteon Corp. in Dearborn. Infiniti will make the system available in March as a factory-installed feature on the 2002 Q45. Current Q45 owners will be able to buy the systems and have them installed at Infiniti dealerships, according to the News.
