Ford Motor Co. said on January 27 it will recall 792,000 pickup trucks and sport-utility vehicles because of a fire risk, according to a Reuters report. The risk stems from overheating of the speed control switch. The voluntary recall is for the 2000 model-year F-150 pickup trucks, Expedition and Navigator SUVs; and 2001 model-year F-Series Super Crew pickup trucks equipped with speed control. The recall comes after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration received 39 reports of fires and launched an investigation in November. Ford is recommending that owners of the affected models park their vehicles in the open until they can have the switch disconnected or replaced at a registered dealer. The automaker will be notifying the owners of the vehicles in the beginning of February to have the electrical connector from the speed control switches disconnected, the report said Ford is in the process of acquiring replacement speed control switches, according to the automaker.
