Ford May Make Diesel Part of Its Plan to Improve Fuel Economy

Ford Motor Co. CEO Bill Ford says he would like to make diesel engines, historically a marginal niche market in the United States, part of his quest to improve the fuel economy of his company's pickups and sport-utility vehicles, according to USA Today. Because of setbacks in developing more efficient gasoline-powered engines, Ford has been intentionally vague about how he plans to honor a pledge made by his predecessor, Jacques Nasser, to increase the fuel economy of the automaker's SUVs 25 percent by 2005. But the automaker has acknowledged it is developing a diesel-powered Focus car for the United States, and sources close to the company say they have seen plans for a V6 diesel engine intended for the F Series light-duty pickup by 2005, according to USA Today. That engine could end up in SUVs, industry analysts say.
