Ford Motor Co. will offer a more fuel efficient engine with its Focuscompact car as an option for the 2015 model-year, the automaker announced Monday.

The 2015 Focus will be unveiled at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, and will be shown at the Geneva International Motor Show on March 4.

In the U.S., Ford will offer a 1L, four-cylinder EcoBoost engine with the Focus, which is expected to arrive later this year. The engine will be mated with a six-speed transmission.

Fuel economy is expected to improve from the car's base 2L GDI inline four that helps the vehicle deliver an EPA-rated 40 miles per gallon on the highway.

Ford currently offers the new engine on five nameplates in Europe. The engine accounts for 32 percent of Focus sales and 26 percent of Fiesta sales on that continent.

In addition to the new engine offering, Ford has updated the Focus with sportier body styling and a standard rearview camera. Options include a safety system that warns the driver when they're not staying in their lane or when another driver has entered a blind spot.

The Focus has been a stout fleet vehicle in commercial, government, and rental fleets with calendar-year 2012 registrations in those categories coming in at 10,873, 4,725, and 48,069 vehicles respectively.
