DriveCam Video Systems, a developer of fleet safety technology, announced that it has been issued a third patent for technology related to its DriveCam video event data recorder. DriveCam also received two other patents in 2002 and has additional patents pending. U.S. Patent No. 6,389,340 was granted for the vehicle data recorder, a self-contained device for capturing video imagery in response to a triggering event. U.S. Patent No. 6,405,112 covers enhanced data retrieval capabilities. The most recent, U.S. Patent No. 6,449,540, represents a method for detection and recognition of a predetermined wave pattern produced external to a vehicle. These patents relate to the DriveCam Video Event Data Recorder, a tiny video camera mounted behind a vehicle's rear view mirror that records what drivers see and hear. DriveCam is part of the company's Driving Feedback System used by commercial fleets to evaluate driver performance. According to the company, used by thousands of commercial vehicles, the Driving Feedback system has been proven to reduce the frequency and severity of collisions by changing driver behavior. The complete Driving Feedback System includes the DriveCam video event data recorder, HindSight 20/20 software, a manager's guide, driver guide, and instructional videotape. The DriveCam video recorder measures G-forces caused by activities such as hard braking, acceleration, harsh cornering or collisions, which trigger it to save a driving event for later viewing. HindSight 20/20 is a Windows-based software program that allows fleet managers to download and view driving events and use them to evaluate individual driving performance.
