Chrysler Announces U-Connect Hands-Free Calling System

DaimlerChrysler AG's Chrysler Group jumped onto the telematics bandwagon Jan. 9 by announcing that U-Connect, its first hands-free communications system, will debut this spring. According to Chrysler officials, U-Connect will let motorists make hands-free, voice-activated calls from mobile phones equipped with Bluetooth wireless technology. Bluetooth, a form of telematics technology, allows products to emit and receive low bandwidth wireless connections. Telematics encompasses any wireless communication between an outside source and a vehicle. The U-Connect system can be installed on any Chrysler, Dodge or Jeep car or truck built in the 2000-2002 model years this spring, according to Chrysler. Consumers will buy the system at dealerships. Chrysler said it will offer factory installation in 2003. Johnson Controls Inc. helped develop the U-Connect system.
