Audi to Offer GM's OnStar Service
Germany's Audi said April 11 that it will be the latest automaker to offer General Motors Corporation's OnStar communications service in its vehicles. Audi, Volkswagen AG's upscale brand, will offer OnStar in its new A4 sedan due to be sold in the United States later this year. OnStar, which connects drivers to a 24-hour on-call center for emergency services or help finding a restaurant or hotel, is one of the new services GM is offering in a move for more fee revenues. GM has been trying to broaden OnStar use to offset its high fixed cost, and establish it in the growing market for telematics services. OnStar, which recently passed the million subscriber mark, is currently available under a different brand name on Toyota's Lexus LS 430 sedan and Honda's Acura RL sedan. OnStar users will soon be able to check for traffic tie-ups and trade stocks or check their financial portfolios using the system's hands-free voice-activation software, according to GM officials.
