Ford Motor Co. is recalling an estimated 28,579 2019 F-250 and F-350 Super Duty trucks equipped with electronically locking rear differentials because the passenger-side rear axle shaft may fail prematurely due to a material issue.

This situation could result in a loss of drive power as well as the inability to hold the vehicle still when in the Park position. If the parking brake is not applied, the vehicle could move unintentionally, which increases the likelihood of a collision.

The defect came as a result of "improper material handling during the bar stock cooling process at the axle shaft material supplier," according to federal records.

To fix the problem, Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the passenger side-rear axle shaft. Dealers will replace it if necessary at no cost to owners.

The recall begins Oct. 21. Owners can reach Ford customer service at (866) 436-7332. Ford's reference number for this recall is 19S31.
