How it's Made: The Acela Monterra [Photos]

Vehicle ResearchPhotos 22August 22, 2024

Ever wondered what it takes to turn an old Light Medium Tactical Vehicle (LMTV) into a state-of-the-art Acela Monterra? We sat down and learned exactly what it takes to make a work truck that can go anywhere and get the job done.

Check out our complete photo gallery for a comprehensive guide that walks you through the steps involved and shows the dedication and craftsmanship that go into each truck.

Want to dive even deeper into the process? We've got you covered

Acela starts by replacing the original hydraulic systems on each LMTV with a new electric-over hydraulic system. This is done for the safety of its team and ease of access to the engine because the original air-over hydraulic system was faulty and unreliable. In this photo a technician is programming the transmission.

The trucks are then sent to the mechanics bay, where expert mechanics complete an exhaustive 300-point inspection. Major components are scanned using state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment. Any mechanical issues are addressed, and sub-standard parts are replaced. If there are too many issues with an LMTV, it fails the program and is cannibalized for parts for other trucks.

... it's looking a lot less like a truck right now - but just wait for the transformation!

After the mechanics complete a successful inspection and the truck has been approved for the reset program, the trucks begin the "Tear Down" process. First, the cab comes off. During the tear down process, each truck is disassembled for complete overhaul.

Then, the doors come off....

Now we are starting to see the fresh new look of the Acela Monterra coming to life!

All the trim pieces and bells and whistles that make the Monterra a modern truck for fleets are being added back in.

The completed cab is now assembled and ready for the next step!

After the Monterra is fully re-assembled, performance testing begins. All critical torques, clearances and pressure settings are set to specification and recorded during the reset process

In the interior paint booth, the trucks get a brand new look.

Each cab is completely dismantled down to sheet metal. All seals, glass, doors, door componentry, interior and dash components and electrical harnesses are removed.

Cabs and cab components are meticulously rehabilitated using state of the art body repair and painting techniques and equipment. Chassis and take-off parts undergo a similarly intensive process to ensure that they perform and look better than new.

Now it's time to reassemble the chassis! Once each department completes refurbishing all components, all hoses, belts seals, gaskets, knobs, switches, and gauges in the chassis are replaced.

Next the cab is reassembled. Other parts are inspected and measured against strict ATC and/or OEM guidelines, and all parts that are out of specification are replaced

Cabs are upfitted with all new interior seating, floor mats, air temperature and sound insulation, paneling, lighting, electronics, glass, and digital instrumentation

Then, the interior gets its personalized attention.

During Final Assembly the cab reattached and secured to the chassis. All fluids are flushed and replaced with new OEM-certified fluids.

Wheels are completely rebuilt and mounted with new tires.

Badging is added and final touches are made. In total, more than 600 parts are replaced in every Monterra.

Once final assembly is complete, the cab and interior are all done and ready for the final steps.
