Washington Gas announced its Northwest Station Fleet Facility in Rockville, Md., earned the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold Certification from the United States Green Building Council.
The company implemented several initiatives to earn LEED Gold Status, including:
Access to public transportation.
20% of recycled or salvaged materials used in construction and 20% regional content.
75% of construction waste recycled or salvaged.
Water-efficient landscaping.
Indoor air quality efforts, including low-emitting materials in plants, coatings, and flooring.
Earlier this month, the utility released its corporate sustainability targets for 2025, including a goal to reach carbon neutrality for its fleet and facilities by 2025. This would require sourcing 100% electricity from renewable options, continuing to reduce fuel and energy consumption through efficiency and conservation measures, and relying on renewable natural gas and carbon offsets to accoung for the remaining energy use and greenhouse gas emissions.
The fleet facility is the second facility from Washington Gas to receive LEED Gold certification. Its Springfield center attained the certification in 2012. The company recently announced it will move its headquarters to The Wharf in Washington DC, which will be designed to meet LEED Gold Core and Shell green building standards.
