Traffic congestion cost Americans time, money, and fuel, according to the Urban Mobility Report’s analysis of 1999 traffic conditions. The report found that the average American spent 36 hours per year stuck in traffic, up from 11 hours in 1982.

Across the 68 cities studied, the annual congestion bill reached $78 billion, with 4.5 billion hours of wasted time and 6.8 billion gallons of wasted fuel.

How to Make Commuting Time More Manageable

Choose activities that keep your attention on driving. Reading, studying maps, cleaning the interior, and other tasks should wait until the vehicle is safely parked.
