SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) is adding fuel cells to its list of electric vehicle power sources by adding two DaimlerChrysler F-Cell passenger cars to its fleet. DaimlerChrysler had delivered 15 fuel cell vehicles to customers in California and Michigan sine the Department of Energy (DOE) Hydrogen Learning Demonstration Project began in Washington, D.C. The two vehicles in Sacramento bring that total to 17. The daily use of the F-Cells is expected to aid DaimlerChrysler in improving the next generation fuel cell vehicles as part of the constant effort to create clean transportation alternatives. The data collected from DaimlerChrysler’s more than 100 fuel cell vehicles around the world is to be contributed to the DOE Hydrogen Learning Demonstration Project. The F-Cell has a range of 100 miles and a top speed of 85 mph. An 88 hp (65 kW) electric motor allows 0-to-60 acceleration in 14 seconds. BP has opened one hydrogen refueling station in Southfield, Michigan. And in cooperation with Praxair, BP has another station at the Los Angeles International Airport. Fuel cells release energy from the reaction of hydrogen and oxygen with a catalyst. As result, hydrogen powered fuel cell vehicles emit only water vapor as exhaust.
