If you own a 1999 Acura Integra, watch out. CCC Information Services Inc.’s 2004 most stolen vehicle report shows that one of every 200 register ’99 Integra’s was stolen last year, making it the most stolen car of 2004. Following in second was the 2002 BMW M Roadster with the 1998 Acura Integra coming in as the third most stolen vehicle. CCC, a technology provider to the automotive claims and collision repair industry, processes more than 1 million claims-related matters a day. The company analyzes the total-loss claims it receives and matches those with the stolen vehicle data versus registration volume information from R.L. Polk & Co. Those figures allow them to determine the rate of theft of registered cars. Cars built for speed are likely targets with the Audi S4 and the Mercury Marauder making the top 25 along with the BMW Roadster. There is also a “clustering” of cars where models of sequential years may be popular choices for thieves. In fact, eight of the top 25 most stolen vehicles are the 1994-2001 Integra’s. Part of the reason for that is because of similarity among models of different years, with some parts fitting the same model made three years later. Vehicles made in 1997 were the most susceptible to theft, followed by model years 1996, 1999, 1995 and 1998. The high number of stolen Integra’s made Acura the most stolen make of 2004, followed by Hummer, Land Rover, Daewoo and Honda. The top three vehicle segments with the highest rate of theft for 2004 were the Full-size Utility (Cadillac Escalade), Upper Midsize (Acura Integra) and the Prestige Luxury (Bentley Continental and Mercedes Benz). Temporary thefts, or “joy rides,” were not included in determining the list. No 2005 models were factored in the process.
